Professor George Kernohan
George is a Professor in Health Research at Ulster University, Northern Ireland. He has a breadth of expertise in research across the life course in many different settings. This includes safe birth and long term conditions such as Parkinson’s and dementia. He is a research scientist with a focus on research design and methods and has developed a new model for knowledge transfer. He has an interest in sharing research knowledge for humanitarian purposes and addressing health at the margins. He is the Primary Investigator on the Birth Across the Borders project.
Dr Lesley Dornan
Lesley is a Lecturer in Public Health in the School of Nursing, Ulster University, Northern Ireland. She has worked extensively in global maternal health and research for over 15 years. This has included living and working in South East Asia for over ten years with a wide range of international partners. She is passionate about providing accessible and relevant education and resources to mothers and families in hidden communities and fragile settings. She is the South East Asia Research Lead on the Birth Across the Borders project and leads the overseas implementation of the project and the antenatal health research in collaboration with our local teams.
Professor Jackie McCoy
Jackie is a Professor of Management Development and Associate Dean for Global Engagement at the Ulster University Business School. She is currently responsible for the development and oversight of the Business School’s international collaborations and is a recognised authority within the field of business and management. She has acted as an advisor to government on economic issues and enterprise development within the third sector. Jackie is a Co-investigator and research lead for our social enterprise resources in collaboration with our local teams.
Professor Marlene Sinclair
Marlene is Professor Emeritus of Midwifery at Ulster University, Northern Ireland. With nearly 30 years of experience as a midwife and former nurse she has made a significant contribution to maternal health research and was the first Chair of Midwifery Research in the island of Ireland. She is passionate about providing excellent care for women and supporting midwives to develop their skills. She is a Co-Investigator and research lead for the emergency obstetric resources in collaboration with our local lead Dr Aye and our local teams.
Dr Lisa Hanna-Trainor
Lisa is a public health researcher in the School of Nursing and Paramedic Sciences at Ulster University, Northern Ireland. She has over 10 years experience in public health research with a focus on reducing health inequalities and improving health outcomes amongst vulnerable populations. She is passionate about undertaking research with marginalised groups including those with hidden / unseen disability and those from fragile settings. Her work prioritises ‘giving a voice’ to these vulnerable groups. She is the research fellow on the Birth Across the Borders project with responsibility for undertaking the research in collaboration with international partners.
Sophie Maudslay
Sophie has trained as a midwife in both the UK and Canada and worked internationally. Sophie is therefore able to provide a global perspective on midwifery practices and has a deep understanding of international healthcare standards. This is complimented by a background of project management within the business sector, gained prior to her midwifery training. With a Masters in Disaster Healthcare, she is passionate about maternal and newborn health in fragile settings, disaster preparedness, and emergency response. She is the Global Research Manager on the Birth Across the Borders project and coordinates all aspects of the project, whilst also providing midwifery expertise
